Some places

Exhibition. In his exhibition at Romainmôtier, David Gagnebin-de-Bons presents "still life" photographs on dark backdrops recalling the style of Baroque mystical painters. Self-reflexive in his approach, David highlights the issues of his own work as an artist in relation to the tradition that he appropriates and metabolizes. In his work it is a question beyond the visible things, he guides us somewhere else ... into strange landscapes, anticipated or dreamed of: the other places.

From October 15th, 2011 to February 26th, 2012

In the mountains with Nathalie

Book. This book is conceived as a companion to the festival. It features works of contemporary imagemakers who approach the mountain in its various and multiple states: spectacular, sublime, domesticated, constructed (even artificial!), out-of-touch and frightening.

Published by 5 Continents, Milan and  edited by Nathalie Herschdorfer, director of the Festival Alt. +1000.

Hi Altitude

Exhibition. The village of Rossinière in the foothills of the Swiss Alps is reputed for its 17th- and 18th- century architecture (chalet of Swiss painter Balthus!). During this summer, the contemporary photo exhibition High Altitude will contrast this vernacular village identity with questioning, inquisitive and provocative images.

Mountains have been instrumental in defining identities, in Switzerland, as elsewhere in the world. Are mountains still a source of inspiration for today's creators?

10 exhibitions, including Matthieu Gafsou’s excellent Alps series, can be visited from July 17 to September 19 in various spaces of the village of Rossinière.

The unique memory of David

Book. First monograph of David Gagnebin-de Bons, De mémoire includes 20 photographs, where each image relates to a specific text. By confronting image and text, he creates a third object, «a tribute to the personal and subjective "small pictures of the great photography", to beloved anonymous and to living or dead masters».

Biel Photo Days

Exhibition. Chance hurt things, as two festivals devoted to contemporary photography take place at the same time in Romandie. Left Vevey, with its festival images, right, Biel Photo Days, in its fourteenth edition.

The second allows you to discover new work by Alban Kakulya and Yann Mingard. Going separated ways since their road adventure East of New Eden, Yann Mingard went to document centers for conserving plant germplasm for mankind. His photos point out the striking contrast of those places that, in order to preserve life, enclose it in containers, themselves buried in bunkers (Series Deposit). Alban Kakulya travelled to a green country to bring back images that document everyday social-tourism-climate reality which Greenland will face in the coming years.

In addition, do not miss the photo documentary by Steeve Iuncker in Bosnia. A series of diptychs linking on one side a photo reportage for the European Union (regarding the disarmament of the country), to a more personal and critical look at a population that has been the victim of the collateral damage.

Domestic slavery

Exhibition. A photo exhibition on domestic slavery appears in Geneva. Trafficking in humans is a widespread reality in the world, unfortunatley also in Geneva. From September 6 to 29, the Association Imaginaid in partnership with the City of Geneva, presents Domestic Slavery, a photographic documentary by Raphaël Dallaporta, with texts by Ondine Millot. A photo exhibition presented in posters in Geneva streets and in public places. A vibrant testimony against the trivialization of daily inhumanities.

Portraits by Seb Agnetti

Book. John Armleder. Valerie Belin and Lemercier. Ora-Ïto. Miss Kittin & The Hacker. Justice. Agyness Deyn. Camille. Hafsia Herzi. Stress and Jules-Edouard Moustic. It sounds all very name dropping, but that is part of the artistic-people bestiary that photographer Seb Agnetti shot since he moved from Lausanne to Paris. All portraits were orders from what he calls "beautiful magazines (Citizen K, Das Magazin, Fun, Nico International, Annabelle, The optimum ...).  He has put all these portraits together in a limited edition book (five copies). There we can discover his delightfully staged photos with a touch of madness when found necessary. His portraits are always mastered to detail but his poses never appear frozen.

Monsieur mathieu watches TV

Exhibition. Today's television is an unforgiving universe. To illustrate the ever more oppressive image and more particularly that of the small screen in our world, the TV series of Mathieu Bernard-Reymond experiments "the combination of two very different materials: the rough and coarse TV screens shots and the sharper image of backgrounds photographed in the traditional manner". The result is digitally abyssal images and a real reflection on the position to adopt vis-à-vis a bulimic media landscape.

From january 17th until march 14th 2010, at Photoforum Pasquart in Bienne (www.pasquart.ch and www.monsieurmathieu.com)

Two Swiss went east

Art books. In 2002, while Europe was opening to the East, Yann Mingard and Alban Kakulya went for one month and a half to take pictures of waning frontiers. By following a track of 1,600 kilometers (one started on the banks of the North Sea and the other on the Baltic), they have produced a major geopolitical report, alternating breathtaking landscapes and portraits of inhabitants that are close to be considered as anthropologic. Seven years later, the book East of a new Eden (320 p., 150 pictures, edited by Lars Müller Publishers) shows masterly this epic adventure.

When walls become bridges

Exhibition. The Wall of Shame came down twenty years ago. For this «anniversary», Imaginaid gallery prepared a first-rate exhibition in Geneva. On the Pont de la Machine – open again for this event – the aim is not so much to focus on the past but to witness that today, from Cyprus to Mexico via Ireland or Israel, walls still exist to bluntly exhibit the differences of opinions or religions... With pictures from Stephen Duroy, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Anthony Suau, Shai Kremer or Ron Havi, the trail of 24 photographs shows a reality and forces at the same time the visitor to bypass each of these pictures as if these were in themselves obstacles that rise between the two banks of the Rhône.

The exhibition will remain until 31st of january 2010. More information on www.imaginaid.org
